In 2006, Major League Soccer wanted to place a second team in the New York Area, but because of territorial rights and zoning issues, this conversation was placed on hold until around 2010. In 2012, Manchester City was named the new owner of the New York City Football Club, the to-be 20th team in the MLS.

Manchester City, in partnership with the New York Yankees, paid the $100 million expansion fee to join the league, officially naming the New York City Football Club an official team in May of 2013. This made them the second team based in the city besides the New York Red Bulls.

During their first year in the league, the team played well but ultimately failed in the playoff season, and this was a pattern that persisted for about five years after. The club won its first international trophy when they beat out Atlas Futbol Club in the 2022 Campeones Cup.

The first head coach to lead the NYCFC through their seasons was Jason Kreis, a former Dallas Burn and Real Salt Lake soccer player. He coached for NYFC for a few years before securing a new coaching position for Orlando City FC. He was replaced by Patrick Vieira.

Vieria is considered one of the greatest midfielders of our generation despite his limited time playing on the field. Since then, he’s developed a successful career as a football manager before returning to France in 2021. The next head coach, Ronny Deila, helped the team reach their first victory in the 2021 MLS Cup and was followed by Nick Cushing.

The NYCFC quickly formed rivalries with the Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union. The Toronto FC soon became another key rival.

Top players of the past and present for NYCFC include Sean Johnson, Maxi Moralez, David Villa, and Jack Harrison.

Currently, the team plays their home games at Yankee Stadium (home of the Yankees) in the Bronx. They also play additional home games at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, and Citi Field in Queens. They’ve also been known to train on Pier 5 fields in Brooklyn.

While many of these stadiums, like Yankee Stadium, are constructed for baseball, they can be transformed for soccer games. The stadium has a maximum capacity of nearly 50,000 for games and concerts, though the upper levels typically aren’t open for NYCFC games.
