Real Salt Lake got its start in 2004 when it became the second franchise in the Major Soccer League, the premier professional soccer organization in America. The club's founder was Dave Checketts, and the club's first coach was John Ellinger, who also coached FC Dallas. The Salt Lake City club had a fair first season with a record of 5-5-22.
Real Salt Lake competes in the MLS Western Conference along with powerhouses LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, and the Portland Timbers. The club won its first MLS Cup in 2009, five years after it began playing as a Major League Soccer team. The club came close to getting 2010 Supporters Shields and the 2013 US Open and MLS Cups.
Jason Kreis is the most notable Real Salt Lake coach. Time will eventually bring in a coach who surpasses Kreis' almost mythical record, but for now, no Real Salt Lake coach has. The coach holds a 112-85-64 record and brought RSL to the playoffs in six of seven seasons. During this time, RSL won an MLS Cup and became runners-up to another MLS Cup and a US Open Cup.
Many great players are on Salt Lake's all-time roster. We'll keep the list brief, but these three players deserve mention: Jason Kreiss, Álvaro Saborío, and Kyle Beckerman.
There are a bunch of RSL games that rank as some of the most memorable, but we’ll keep this brief:
1. Real Salt Lake vs. Saprissa. The CONCACAF Champions League Semifinal was one of the most memorable matchups. The goals made by Jamison Olave went down as one of the club's most impressive, and Alvaro Saborio opening up scoring against his old club is something to remember.
2. Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy at the 2009 MLS Cup Final. This one isn't famous just because RSL came out as victors. Of course, that's part of it. However, what makes this most remarkable is that no one expected RSL to win against the dominant Los Angeles Galaxy.
3. Real Salt Lake vs. Monterrey matchup. This game was at the CONCACAF Champions League Final in April 2011. Though this one didn't end in a win, the fact that RSL kept up with Monterrey's pace and managed a draw made RSL one of the only MLS teams that could compete head-to-head in Mexico.
Rivalries add an extra layer of excitement to sports. Proximity always helps a rivalry thrive because of the ease of travel and the number of times teams get to meet. Since joining the MLS, Real Salt Lake forged some intense rivalries, making these Real Salt Lake events not to be missed.
You might hear arguments for Portland or the Seattle Sounders FC, but the RSL's top rival is none other than Sporting Kansas City. Some might point to the 2013 MLS Cup final, where SKC stole RSL's win, and they'd be right. That was one of the moments that solidified this rivalry.
There's also the moment that SKC played audio of RSL's 2013 defeat in 2016. The matchup between the two immediately after ended 2-1, with RSL handing down a righteous defeat that many hold as a fond memory.
Another rivalry is with the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. The proximity of these fields fuels these games.
Real Salt Lake plays home games at America First Field in Sandy, Utah. The stadium's construction finished in 2004 and has a seating capacity of more than 20,000, with luxury and premium offerings. Before 2022, the field was called Rio Tinto Stadium (the RioT). The Real Salt Lake Schedule is simple — this is a soccer-only field — no need to share with an NFL or NBA team.
As with all stadiums, America First Field has a clear bag policy. We recommend looking at the stadium's A to Z Guide to find out what you can bring. Children aged three and older need tickets for entry. Children two and younger don't need tickets as long as they are held on laps.
