The 76ers were founded as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946-47, and began play in the National Basketball League. The Nationals were one of seven NBL teams to join the newly-formed NBA after the BAA-NBL merger in 1949. After a successful run in Syracuse that saw the franchise win an NBA championship and appear in three NBA Finals, the team relocated to Philadelphia in 1963.
