Representatives from the Southern Conference met on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn. They wanted to create a new conference, breaking away from the Southern Conference, which already had 17 member institutions. The move to break away from the Southern Conference came after scheduling conflicts and because of the ban on postseason bowl games.

The initial members included Clemson, Duke, Maryland, UNC, NC State, SC, and Wake Forest. Virginia joined later that year in December. Wallace Wade, a Duke football coach, served as the conference’s first interim commissioner. Jim Weaver from Wake Forest later served in that capacity.

The representatives met again on June 14, 1953, to concretize the conference’s bylaws. The newly formed conference went through several names: Dixie, Tobacco, Blue-Gray. Eddie Cameron of Duke suggested the name Atlantic Coast Conference.

The first ACC Basketball Tournament commenced in 1954. The conference instituted its tournament that decides the champion that contends in the NCAA tournament. The ACC tournament brings in the best of the best in the conference and is even responsible for some innovations in the sport, like the three-point line.
