The University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Missouri, the University of Nebraska, and Texas A&M University are all former conference members that left in 2011 or 2012.

Starting in the 2023-24 athletic year, the Big 12 will be adding Brigham Young University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Houston following the departure of the University of Texas and University of Oklahoma.

The Big 12 tournament has been held every year since 1997 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. Later, it was held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas before moving to the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.

In 2008, it was held in Kansas City again, but at the Sprint Center. The tournament will stay in Kansas City until at least 2025.

The Big 12 tournament works a little differently than some other NCAA tournaments, like March Madness. In this, the teams compete in a single-elimination tournament of four rounds. In the first round, the top six teams in the league get byes based on seeding, which is based on regular season wins.
