Baltimore Ravens vs Pittsburgh Steelers Info

The Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers have been embroiled in one of the nastiest NFL rivalries of the past quarter-century. Heated matchups like the Cowboys vs. Eagles and the Raiders vs. Chargers might be older, but you'll be hard-pressed to find two franchises that despise each other more than the Ravens and Steelers. Hall of Famers Ray Lewis, Troy Polamalu, Rod Woodson, and Jerome Bettis have left indelible marks in fierce matchups between two franchises that truly don't like each other. Coaching greats Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, and John Harbaugh have also provided memorable moments in one of the greatest rivalries in the NFL. From Antonio Brown's “Immaculate Extension” to stirring comebacks and performances by quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, and Lamar Jackson, this continued clash between AFC North enemies has provided plenty of classic games throughout the years.

How Did the Ravens vs. Steelers Rivalry Begin?

The Steelers temporarily lost one rival but gained a new one when Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell relocated his franchise to Baltimore in 1996. The city of Baltimore had been craving an NFL franchise for more than a decade after the Colts bolted to Indianapolis. The Browns, who despised the Steelers for decades, took a three-year hiatus before the NFL awarded Cleveland an expansion franchise. The old Browns became the Baltimore Ravens, who struggled against the Steelers in those early years. Bill Cowher's team won six of eight meetings with their new division opponents in the 1990s. Everything changed when Brian Billick's Ravens used a historic defense and solid running game (led by Jamal Lewis) to win the Super Bowl in the 2000 season. The rise of the Ravens meant that the Steelers could no longer take them for granted. The rivalry went into overdrive.

What Is the Steelers Record Against the Ravens?

The Steelers hold a 30-24 series lead over the Ravens, but it's been much closer than that this millennium. Since 1999, the Steelers are 25-23 against their AFC North nemesis. The Ravens have averaged 20.2 points per game, while the Steelers have averaged 19.6 points per game in those 48 contests. No matter how much two fan bases hate each other, though, the best rivalries endure when both teams are competitive. It doesn't get much more competitive than having two teams separated by just over a half-point per game over two decades. The Steelers have won three of the four postseason meetings with the Ravens, but each team has had its fair share of glory. The Ravens and Steelers have won two Super Bowls apiece since the start of the rivalry. Players like James Harrison, Santonio Holmes, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott, Antonio Brown, and LaMarr Woodley have added to this unique clash between two tough-minded and talkative franchises.

History of the Ravens vs. Steelers Rivalry

The Steelers have butted heads with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns in their division for more than a half-century, but no team has posed more challenges in this generation as the Baltimore Ravens. The two teams have locked up for some incredible games that have included thrilling comebacks and heartbreak.

Ravens vs. Steelers: '90s to Mid-2000s

The Ravens were a punching bag for the Steelers after Art Modell moved his team out of Cleveland. Bill Cowher's Steelers went 6-2 against their new divisional opponents in the 1990s, including a five-game winning streak. Even when it looked like the Ravens were in control, the Steelers managed to come out victorious. Pittsburgh quarterback Kordell Stewart orchestrated the greatest comeback in franchise history by rallying from a 21-0 deficit to beat the Ravens in a regular-season game in 1997. Bruising running back Jerome Bettis rushed for 137 yards, and wide receiver Yancey Thigpen racked up 162 receiving yards to foil the Ravens home game at Memorial Stadium. Stewart & Co. dismantled Ted Marchibroda's Ravens, 37-0, later in the season for the biggest blowout in the history of the rivalry. The Ravens didn't get their first road win in the series until late in the 1999 NFL season when running back Priest Holmes and wide receiver Qadry Ismail helped topple the Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium. Brian Billick's arrival as the Ravens head coach changed the fortune of the franchise and ratcheted up the rivalry. The Ravens used one of the best defenses in NFL history led by superstar linebacker Ray Lewis to get to the NFL mountaintop. Baltimore beat the Giants in Super Bowl XXXV to cap an unforgettable 2000 season. The Steelers, however, didn't wilt. Cowher & Co. won their first five games against the Ravens in the new millennium, and the real fun between the divisional rivals was about to begin.

Ravens vs. Steelers: Mid-2000s to Present

The hatred between the Ravens and Steelers truly knows no bounds. Ben Roethlisberger's assessment in 2009 that there were some people “on both teams that genuinely don't like each other” perfectly summed up the rivalry. This wasn't just about football. This was personal. Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward once claimed that Ravens linebacker Bart Scott threatened to kill him. Steelers linebacker Joey Porter delivered a cheap shot that sidelined Ravens tight end Todd Heap one year. Ravens future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis broke the Steelers' prized rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall's shoulder on a thunderous collision in 2008. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's arrival in 2007 and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh's hiring the following season was the best thing for this rivalry. The two coaches turned their teams into juggernauts that played with the same tough-minded, old-school style. The average margin of victory in the rivalry dipped to seven points after Tomlin and Harbaugh took over their respective franchises. Ten of Harbaugh's first 12 games against Tomlin's Steelers were decided by three or fewer points. The Ravens and Steelers have won 16 of the last 20 division crowns, including eight of the last 10 in the AFC North. The past decade has been filled with iconic plays and games. The Steelers delivered heartbreak to the Ravens twice in 2010. Troy Polamalu's forced fumble late in the game set the stage for Ben Roethlisberger's game-winning touchdown pass that clinched the division. The Steelers delivered another dagger to the Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs. Baltimore blew a 21-7 to their nemesis. The Steelers beat the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game before ultimately losing to the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl. The storied rivalry between the AFC North foes took a bizarre turn in 2013 thanks to Mike Tomlin's sideline shenanigans during a Thanksgiving night classic. NBC cameras caught Tomlin curiously straddling the sideline during Jacoby Jones' kickoff return. Jones slowed down to avoid the Steelers head coach and was tackled on what looked like a sure touchdown. The NFL issued a $100,000 fine to Tomlin, who defended himself to no avail. The Ravens exacted revenge in 2014 by pulling off their first playoff win against the Steelers at Heinz Field. Joe Flacco led the Ravens to a wild card win over their AFC North nemesis before losing a heartbreaker to the New England Patriots in the divisional round. The seesaw rivalry tilted back in the Steelers' favor during a 2016 Christmas Day classic. The Ravens jumped out to a double-digit lead before Steelers versatile running back Le'Veon Bell scored a pair of touchdowns to give Mike Tomlin's team the edge. The Ravens re-took the lead before Antonio Brown stretched out the ball into the end zone while being draped by three Ravens defenders for the game-winning touchdown with four seconds left in the game. Steeler Nation dubbed it the “Immaculate Extension.” The victory clinched the AFC North for the Steelers. Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, and Ben Roethlisberger are still around, but the Ravens are now led by electrifying quarterback Lamar Jackson, who has made sure this rivalry is as heated and competitive as ever. T.J. Watt, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool, and Diontae Johnson are headliners for the Steelers, while Jackson lost promising running back J.K. Dobbins to a season-ending knee injury in the preseason. But it doesn't really matter. Whether it's at Heinz Field or M&T Bank Stadium, every Steelers and Ravens game tells its own special story.

The Flacco vs. Roethlisberger Rivalry

Ben Roethlisberger and Joe Flacco have played in some of the most memorable NFL games of the past 15 years. The Steelers and Ravens rivalry was never more heated than from 2008 to 2010 when the AFC North rivals hooked up eight times, including twice in the postseason. Roethlisberger beat Flacco three times during Flacco's 2008 rookie season, including a classic AFC Championship Game punctuated by Troy Polamalu's game-sealing 40-yard interception for a touchdown. Flacco went 13 of 30 passes for 141 yards, three interceptions, and a nightmarish 18.2 passer rating, while Roethlisberger did just enough (255 passing yards and one touchdown) to help the Steelers advance to the Super Bowl. Flacco fell apart in the second half of the 2010 divisional playoffs against the Steelers. The Ravens quarterback managed just 125 passing yards and was sacked four times as the Steelers rallied to advance to their fourth AFC Championship Game in seven seasons. Flacco won a Super Bowl MVP in 2012 before getting some payback against the Steelers in a wild card win at Heinz Field. But Roethlisberger played better in big moments. Flacco went 11-13 against the Steelers before he was traded to the Broncos in 2019 to usher in the Lamar Jackson era. Roethlisberger, a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion, is in his 18th season with the Steelers. The backbone of the Steelers for the past two decades will wind up in Canton one day. Flacco's red-hot 2012 postseason turned him into a champion, but he never consistently got the better of the Ravens' most hated rival.
