Who Are the Colorado Avalanche?
The Colorado Avalanche are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Central Division in the Western Conference. The franchise was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Nordiques joined the NHL as part of the NHL-WHA merger in 1979. New ownership moved the franchise to Denver and renamed the club after the 1994-95 season. And it didn't take long for the franchise's new fanbase to celebrate. The Avalanche swept the Florida Panthers to win the 1996 Stanley Cup Final and become only the second North American professional sports franchise to win a championship in the first season after relocation. The Avs' all-time leading scorers Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Adam Foote, and star goaltender Patrick Roy formed the nucleus for the title winners. The Avs struck gold again in 2001 when Roy and Sakic propelled them to a second Stanley Cup in dramatic fashion. Colorado rallied from a 3-2 series deficit against the reigning champion New Jersey Devils to win it all in a seven-game classic. However, that level of success didn't endure. The Avs failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs from 2011 to 2021.
Colorado Avalanche Schedule
The Colorado Avalanche look to bounce back from their playoff disappointment in 2020 and finally breakthrough with arguably the NHL's most talented roster. Jared Bednar's loaded and deep team has all the pieces to hoist the Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history. But will they exorcise their postseason demons? No team is positioned to topple the reigning two-time Stanley Champion Tampa Bay Lightning than the Avs. There's hope that the team can snap out of that funk this season due to an embarrassment of riches all over the ice. General manager Joe Sakic has assembled a roster loaded with explosive stars like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar. Sprinkle in respected captain Gabriel Landeskog, defenseman Samuel Girard, and 20-year-old breakout candidate Bowen Byram, and the Avs just might be unstoppable this season. However, Colorado fans know all too well that a great roster doesn't guarantee anything. The Avalanche lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round last season despite winning the Presidents' Trophy with the league's best regular season record. The Avs will have a season-long five-game road trip to face the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, and New York Rangers in the first week of December. Colorado will have a season-long four game homestand at Ball Arena in April. The NHL will take a hiatus from Feb. 7 to 22 to accommodate players participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The NHL and NHL Players' Association could alter those plans based on the COVID-19 landscape at the time. The NHL schedule will be adjusted if players don't go to the Winter Games. Expectations are sky-high for the Avalanche again. Follow their journey this season live by getting the best deals for tickets through TickPick.
