Las Vegas Grand Prix History

F1 racing is governed by The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which oversees all motorsports, including the United States Grand Prix and the famous one on the Las Vegas Street Circuit.

The history of the F1 international auto racing competition goes back to the 1950s. The first time a Formula One race took place in Las Vegas was in the 1980s. Called The Caesars Palace Grand Prix, it was not as popular as some hoped it would be. The circuit wasn’t in the midst of the Las Vegas strip like the current one is. Instead, it looped around the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel.

Despite early failures, the desire to hold a race in top cities around the world never died. In 2017, F1 announced trademarks for several new races: the New York Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix. It wasn’t until 2021 that serious talks about bringing the F1 back to Las Vegas began.

What Are the Details?

While details may change, you can expect to see some of your favorite drivers like Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz from Ferrari. Seeing these drivers compete is an experience to remember.

The circuit has 17 corners, two DRS zones, and three straights. The entire length is more than three and a half miles or six kilometers of pure Las Vegas sights, where the drivers will zip past some of the most iconic buildings, like the Venetian, Caesars Palace, and the Bellagio. The estimated top speed expected on this circuit is 212 miles per hour or 342 kilometers per hour.

The circuit also boasts many official grandstands distributed through three zones called MSG Sphere, East Harmon, and West Harmon.

Previous Las Grand Prix Winners

As more races continue to be held in Las Vegas, we’re sure to see more winners and exciting races. Previous winners of the Las Vegas Grand Prix (or the Caesars Palace Grand Prix) have had two winners over the two years it existed. Nelson Piquet won the championship in 1981. A year later, Keke Rosberg also won this competition, the driver’s first win of that season.

The first winner since the Vegas Grand Prix made its return was Dutch phenom Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing.

Best Seats for the Best F1 Experience

The best place to get a view of the action is the PG1 Grandstand, where you get not only prime views of the grid but also a likely place where the top drivers will be interviewed afterward. The MSG Grandstand also offers excellent views, specifically of turns six, seven, and eight, as drivers maneuver past these turns. Grandstand tickets tend to be more expensive.

The East Harmon Zone is another grandstand that offers amazing views of the grid, including the start, end, and post-race ceremony. The East Harmon Grandstand also offers views of turns one and two. East Harmon doesn’t sit right on the strip despite having great views. Still, it provides some attractions, like Planet Hollywood.

Some of the most expensive tickets are to Paddock Club (right above the team garages), which includes all-inclusive food and an open bar for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The hospitality packages at the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix are the height of luxury.

How Long Is the Las Vegas Race?

Generally, F1 races last 90 minutes, taking place over the course of three days.

Things To Do in the Area

There are plenty of things to do in the area during the race weekend, from bar hopping and casinos to shopping and eating. Las Vegas has plenty to offer motorsports fans. For hotels, check out the MGM Resort, Resorts World Las Vegas, or the Wynn Las Vegas.
