Wicked is a Broadway show created in 2003 with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and directed by Joe Mantello. The book was written by Winnie Holzman, and Wayne Cilento did the staging. If the name Schwartz sounds familiar, there’s a good reason! He’s behind other Broadway shows like Pippin and Godspell.
The musical took inspiration from Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the Westand, of course, The Wizard of Oz.
This box office hit originally opened in San Francisco in 2003 at the Curran Theater. Later that year, the show opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre. It quickly became a critically successful musical, collecting numerous awards and honors.
The must-see musical won several Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Musical, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, several Drama Desk Awards, and several Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Due to its commercial and critical success, The Land of Oz has a couple of successful national tours and traveled across the globe, including shows in London, Asia, and Northern Europe.
Some of the 19 songs in this musical include:
Wicked takes place before the events of The Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy arrives in Oz after a tornado hits her home in Kansas. Instead of focusing on the heroine of the popular and beloved movie, Wicked focuses on the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Galinda, later to become Glinda.
In Wicked, Elphaba is an outcast because of her emerald-green skin but is famously smart with a strong moral compass. The two witches meet at Shiz University and become roommates. Though disliking each other at first, they eventually become friends. Their friendship, however, is tested when Elphaba finds out that the Wizard of Oz is actually a fraud and wants to render the animals of Oz mute.
Elphaba works to uncover the Wizard of Oz’s conspiracy but the citizens of Oz side with the wizard. Galinda, also aware of the Wizard’s fraud, struggles between standing with her friend Elphaba or falling in line and obeying what the Wizard of Oz says. For her refusal to back down, Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
Overall, the musical is a moving story about female friendship and the struggle against corruption and discrimination.
The musical runs for two hours and 45 minutes.
Wicked has an intermission that lasts for 15 minutes.
When the show debuted in San Francisco, California, in 2003, Idina Menzel played Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth played Galinda. The show received a mixed reception but made some casting changes before its eventual production on Broadway, with Menzel and Chenoweth keeping their starring roles.
Currently, the principal cast members of the production include Alyssa Fox as Elphaba, McKenzie Kurtz as Glinda, and John Dosset as the Wizard.
Other current cast members include:
